The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has led to more than 219 million confirmed cases, with over 4.55 million deaths globally, as of October 2021. The living and working conditions of billions of people worldwide have been significantly disrupted due to different forms of social distancing and lockdowns in many cities.

Currently, New Zealand, and in particular specifically Auckland City, have had their lives disrupted by numerous lockdowns, and the NZ economy has been remarkably weakened as a result of business shutdowns and major restrictions on travel.

Widespread availability of accurate and rapid testing procedures is extremely valuable in unravelling the complex dynamics involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection and immunity.

To this end, All Clear has partnered with Hill Laboratories and Asia Pacific Healthcare Group, some of New Zealand’s largest laboratories to deliver operations in COVID-19 Saliva Testing and COVID-19 Surface Testing, to ensure a safe working environment for large and small businesses. We are currently using the SalivaDirect™ protocol developed at Yale University.

SalivaDirect™ is a screening testing program developed specifically as a means to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19. The protocol was quickly recognised as being a critical step in managing the pandemic and received US FDA emergency use authorisation (EUA) in August 2020. Notes on COVID-19 Saliva testing

While all duty of care will be taken to test and report accurately, no test method is 100% accurate. A result of not detected does not preclude a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

This test should not be used as the only method to identify or prevent SARS-CoV-2 infections. Other steps to prevent infection should be taken including the wearing of face masks and other personal protective equipment, temperature checks and other clinical observations.

 

If the Donor is showing symptoms of COVID-19, the testing must be performed by a General Practitioner or a community testing centre.

 

All Clear COVID-19 Surface Testing

A key part of managing the risks associated with COVID-19 in workplaces is ensuring that hygiene (cleaning and disinfection) practices are working effectively to remove any traces of the virus that may remain on surfaces. While close contact with infected individuals is the primary form of transmission, people can still contract the virus by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

COVID-19 surface sampling (validation testing) is therefore a vital step in ensuring the workplace is safe for re-occupation and does not pose an exposure risk

When Should Surface Testing be Conducted?

There are a number of scenarios where COVID-19 Surface Testing can help a business manage the risks associated with COVID-19. Some examples include, but are not limited to: 

  • After a deep clean has been completed following a recorded positive case
  • To validate disinfection and cleaning protocols and procedures
  • Shortly after modifying or implementing a new disinfection and cleaning procedure
  • Periodically evaluate the effectiveness of current disinfection procedures
  • Testing imported products/goods prior to use/distribution
  • Testing of products/goods prior to export.
  • Part of internal/external audits

If a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19 is identified within a workplace, the property is required to undergo a deep clean to disinfect and remove any residual traces of the virus. To ensure that the cleaning and disinfection process was conducted successfully and no traces of the virus remain, validation testing is necessary. 

Why Surface Testing is Important:

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is  transmitted via droplets and aerosols from an infected person’s mouth or nose when breathing, sneezing, speaking, coughing, singing. While direct close contact (i.e. within 6 feet) with infected individuals is the primary form of transmission, research indicates that individuals can contract the virus via exposure to aerosols or droplets on surfaces. There is evidence that the virus can remain active on surfaces for up to 3 Days. This means that if an individual touches a contaminated surface then touches their eyes, nose or mouth without properly cleaning their hands, they could catch the virus.

According to the WHO, people are most contagious from 2 days before becoming symptomatic up to the early stages of the illness, and people who are asymptomatic can still pass the virus onto others. Regular surface cleaning and disinfection is therefore recommended by CDC – surface testing is a key part in evaluating the effectiveness of current and/or proposed procedures.

Surface testing will help:

  • Assure building occupants that the building/property is safe for occupation, particularly following a positive case. 
  • Confirm that products (e.g. exports/imports) are free from contamination – All Clear’s reports/results can be provided to third parties.
  • Minimise the impact of COVID-19 on business operations
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of employees and building occupants

All Clear COVID-19 Saliva test FAQ’s

All Clear will visit you at your home or workplace to complete sample collection. After a quick check-in process to confirm your identity, clients are provided a sample pottle that they will need to deposit 1.5mL of saliva into. It is a pain-free, quick, and easy process.

We have extensive experience in following accurate scientific procedures to ensure sample and information collection is both adequate and correct. By engaging us to oversee the sample collection process we can ensure accuracy at every step of the process as well as providing a convenient solution to ongoing COVID-19 surveillance requirements.

Typically the entire process will take less than ten minutes.

In short YES! Both Saliva and nasopharyngeal sampling methods have a very similar laboratory process. SalivaDirect is an extraction-free, dulapex RT-qPCR laboratory developed test validated with reagents and instruments from multiple vendors and was submitted for FDA emergency use Authorization in July 2020. While saliva testing is more affordable, easier to collect and safer, collection of nasopharyngeal swabs has been associated with variable, inconsistent, and false negative test results due to the technical difficulties of taking a proper swab.

Our Saliva testing is only available for asymptomatic individuals. If you have been at a location of interest, have COVID-19 symptoms or are feeling unwell, we encourage you to follow all Ministry of Health guidelines and seek medical advice.

The saliva sample is easy to produce and does not involve the discomfort associated with inserting a swab, especially a nasopharyngeal swab, into the nose or mouth.

As a self-collected sample, saliva is more acceptable to collect, especially for those needing regular testing.

The sample collection process is designed so that no one will touch your sample. Suitable PPE gear is worn by all our staff and the collection site will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitised. Everyone who enters a collection site will also be encouraged to use Hand sanitizer as well as the NZ Ministry of Health COVID Tracer App.

After Collection, the samples are transported to the laboratory for processing. You can normally expect result with 12-24hrs. The provision of results is coordinated with your organisation.

COVID-19 is a notifiable disease and therefore once a positive result is confirmed in the laboratory the All-Clear Team will immediately advise the local Medical Officer of Health and your organisation to ensure you get the health support you require as soon as possible. A diagnostic swab test should be taken as soon as possible.

Do not eat or smoke for at least 60 minutes before providing a saliva sample. It is good to be well hydrated which makes it easier to provide a saliva sample, but no water should be consumed in the 10 minutes before the collection of the sample.
