New Lead Safety Standards for New Zealand

New Zealand has introduced important new regulations to reduce lead exposure and better protect public health. From March 1, 2025, all paints, including those used on toys and for rust protection, must contain less than 90 parts per million (ppm) of lead. At the same time, children’s art supplies will be required to meet stricter safety standards designed to minimise the presence of lead and other harmful substances.

Further changes take effect from September 1, 2025, when copper plumbing components used for drinking water systems must contain no more than 0.25% lead. In addition, any time a blood test shows lead levels at or above 0.24 micromoles per litre (approximately 5 micrograms per decilitre), health authorities will be formally notified to help manage potential risks.

To comply with these regulations, companies must prove their products meet the updated standards, and any non-compliant products must be safely removed from the market by September 1, 2025.These measures mark a significant step in safeguarding the health of New Zealand communities, particularly protecting children from the dangers of lead exposure in everyday products.
